EARTHWOOD is a private residence in San Luis Obispo, California.
This landscape design was intended to take this small fenced-in backyard and turn it into a space that everything: a grill, a lounge, a dining space, a water feature, an herb garden, and a fireplace.
Working together with Greg, we came up with the solution of a custom-built wall that’s built along the fence, combining the water feature, grill, kitchenette, fireplace, and seating all into one unit that wraps around the tiny patio. This creates unity in the design and also gives the feeling of a cozy, enclosed courtyard.
The proper plants were also chosen for this landscape, ranging from tall grasses and hedges that run along the back property line to create a visual and noise buffer from the park on the other side, to aromatic herbs planted near the lounge and dining space. This empty backyard went from being a small, unusable space to the client’s own oasis.
The design was created in collaboration with Greg Ross of Contour Landscape Architecture in the winter of 2024.
The project is currently under construction.
